The Egyptian government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, lifted the state of emergency on its southern border to counter an attack by swarms of yellow desert locusts coming from Sudan.

This action came as a result of the monitoring of large swarms of locusts exceeding tens of kilometers, heading from Sudan to the southern Egyptian border areas, specifically in the cities of Halayeb, Shalateen and Abu Ramad in the Red Sea Governorate, which poses a threat to agricultural areas.

The Central Department for Pest Control at the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture continues its efforts to confront locusts, deploying 55 locust bases nationwide, especially in border areas, and is currently conducting a thorough survey of the southern regions of the Red Sea.

In a related context, the head of the ministry’s pest control department, Ahmed Rizk, explained that small swarms of yellow locusts have entered Egypt through the border with Sudan, and were confined to the areas of Halayeb and Shalateen, and pointed out that the specialized teams are following up and combating these swarms immediately.

In a warning to citizens, Rizk explained that the yellow locust feeds on everything that is green, stressing that the authorities are largely controlling the situation so far and have confined the locusts to mountainous areas, stressing that the situation is being dealt with effectively.

Rizk concluded his remarks by stressing that the large quantities of locusts this year are due to early rainfall, and the lack of locust control in Sudan due to the difficult internal conditions there.
