Moroccan King Mohammed VI received, Wednesday in Rabat, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and the two sides discussed a number of files, including the Western Sahara file and the organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
A statement by the Moroccan Royal Court said that the working visit initiated by Sanchez falls within the framework of the continued development of bilateral relations between the two countries, which was inaugurated by the meeting between the Moroccan King and the Spanish Prime Minister in April 2022.
Sánchez reiterated Spain’s position contained in the April 2022 joint statement in support of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, the statement said: “The dynamic created by this Spanish position continues in a satisfactory manner, characterized by the strengthening of cooperation, coordination and partnership in all fields based on the principles of trust, mutual respect, ambition, good neighborliness and fulfillment of commitments.”
Moroccan-Spanish relations are currently revived, after Spain announced in 2022 that the Moroccan initiative on autonomy in the territory of Western Sahara is “the most serious, realistic and credible in order to settle the dispute there.”
The autonomy proposal provided for autonomy for the Territory under Moroccan sovereignty, but the Frente POLISARIO rejected that and demanded the Territory’s secession from Morocco.
For his part, Sanchez said during a press conference at the end of his visit to Morocco: “Spain is a reference partner for Morocco with expected investments of about 45 billion euros by 2050.”
“The economic partnership will be further strengthened in the context of the joint organization of the two countries with Portugal for the 2030 FIFA World Cup,” Sanchez added.
