Spain has recorded an increase in the number of women killed due to sexual violence, reaching 29 victims since the beginning of 2024, after the confirmation of the death of a 48-year-old woman at the hands of her partner last Monday.

According to the Spanish website “20minutos”, the total number of women killed due to sexual violence in Spain has reached 1,273 victims since 2003.

The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo García, and the Government Delegate for Combating Violence against Women, Carmen Martínez Perza, expressed their strong condemnation of gender-based murders, and stressed the need to intensify efforts by institutions, administrations and local communities to combat these crimes and protect women.

As part of the efforts made, the Ministry of Equality has made available the “ALERTCOPS” application, which victims can use to send an alert signal to the police with their geographic location in emergency situations.

It is worth noting that the United Nations defines crimes of sexual violence to include rape, sexual assault, harassment, exploitation and forced prostitution.
