South Sudan received Sudanese army forces that retreated from Al-Meiram, after the Rapid Support Forces captured the 91st Brigade in Al-Fula.
This development comes in the wake of the Rapid Support taking control of the 92nd Brigade center in Al-Meiram, which is located 60 kilometers from the southern border of Sudan, on the fourth of July.
The Commander of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces, Major General Anqun Anqum, said that the Sudanese soldiers were received in the town of Warqit, and the withdrawing forces were informed of the need to remain in the locations they arrived at, where they will be treated as refugees until new directives arrive.
For his part, the governor of Aweil East County, Deng Ahr Ngun, said that the arriving forces are led by a military figure with the rank of brigadier general, who was the commander of the garrison in Al-Mirim. He added that places have been identified for the gathering of these forces, which are now under the supervision of the South Sudanese army, in various towns in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State. Waiting for higher instructions from the public and political leadership.
The recent clashes in Al-Meiram led to the displacement of residents and displaced people from the area and from Babanusa, which increased pressure on local resources in the areas of refuge, especially with regard to drinking water and medical services.
The town of Al-Meiram is distinguished by its strategic importance on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, as it is considered a corridor for food supplies to the states of Darfur and Kordofan and the Misseriya tribal region adjacent to the oil production areas.
It is noteworthy that the state of South Sudan fears the effects of the ongoing conflict in Khartoum spreading to its lands, with the presence of more than 700,000 southerners in the north, the fear of reverse migration, and the possibility of stopping the flow of oil through the pipeline that connects the main oil fields in South Sudan to the port of Port Sudan.
