South Africa secured the bronze medal in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations football tournament in Ivory Coast after defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo in a penalty shootout (6-5) in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

Neither team was able to score during the original time of the match, which ended in a goalless draw (0-0), so the two teams resorted to penalty kicks, which smiled at South Africa (6-5).

This marks the second time that the South African national team has secured the third-place position in its history, with the previous achievement occurring in the 2000 edition. Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo finishes in fourth place.

The final match will take place between Ivory Coast, the host nation, and Nigeria on the evening of Sunday, (February 11th).
