The African National Congress (ANC) announced the expulsion of former president Jacob Zuma from the party due to his formation of a rival party. This decision came after a disciplinary hearing held last week, during which Zuma’s membership was suspended in January.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula stated that Zuma breached the party’s integrity by founding a new party named “Umkhonto we Sizwe,” abbreviated as “MK.” Mbalula emphasized that Zuma’s actions were contrary to the party’s principles and constitution, leading to his expulsion.

In response, Zuma’s new party, which garnered about 15% of the votes in the national elections and became the third-largest party in the country, denounced the disciplinary committee as a “kangaroo court.”

Zuma asserts that he represents the “true” ANC and challenges the leadership of current President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The electoral success of MK has significantly impacted the ANC, causing it to lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994.

The ANC has formed a coalition government with several parties, including its main rival, the Democratic Alliance.

Despite these developments, Zuma maintains his affiliation with the ANC, insisting that he has not abandoned the party’s original principles.

Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, has up to twenty days to appeal the decision.
