The Somali police reported on Saturday that the death toll from the attack on the famous “Lido” Beach in the Somali capital Mogadishu, late Friday night, has risen.

Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hassan said that more than 32 civilians were killed and about 63 others were injured, some seriously.

The Somali Ambulance Service had earlier reported that the death toll had reached 8 and the number of injured had reached 28 in the attack on the famous beach in Mogadishu.

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said that the explosion occurred on Lido Beach while beachgoers were swimming, resulting in deaths and injuries.

Khaire expressed his condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the victims, stressing that the attack shows the hostility of the terrorists towards the Somali people.

Video clips posted on social media showed bodies lying on the beach in the dark, while people tried to escape to a safe place.

Somali National Television reported in a statement that security forces eliminated the attackers and that paramedics were treating the wounded.

The Al-Shabaab movement, linked to “Al-Qaeda”, claimed responsibility for the attack, which is part of a series of similar attacks carried out by the movement.

Somali media confirmed that security forces “neutralized” the gunmen who attacked beachgoers, noting that the rapid action of security forces contributed to neutralizing the attackers and treating the wounded.
