Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed a 10-year defence and economic cooperation agreement with Turkey, which aims to enhance Somalia’s security, independence, and maritime resources, as well as develop the blue economy and fish production.
“The defense and economic cooperation agreement has been signed between the governments of Somalia and Turkey, and this historic agreement, approved by the House of Representatives of our federal parliament, represents a new chapter in our nation’s journey towards a secure and prosperous future,” Sheikh Mohamud wrote on his X account.
“The agreement embodies a shared commitment to combat all forms of illegal activities and will enable us to build a naval force capable and necessary for our maritime security,” Sheikh Mahmood said.
Sheikh Mahmoud continued: “The agreement will also strengthen our blue economy, develop vital economic sectors, and create opportunities for our people and the region.”
“We are extremely grateful to brotherly Turkey for its unwavering and timely support and commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in the region,” Sheikh Mahmood concluded.
