Somali Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman “al-Adalah” said more than 50 al-Shabaab members were killed in a planned military operation in Somalia’s Lower Juba province.
Somali army and Jubaland state forces continue to pursue al-Shabaab elements in the forests for the fourth consecutive day, Somali news agency Suna quoted Justice as saying.
During the military operation, more than 50 members were neutralized, about 20 others from the movement were captured, and many areas were liberated, he said.
According to the agency, the ongoing military operations since last Saturday in villages and areas of the Lower Juba province resulted in the death of many members and leaders of the movement and the arrest of others.
The Somali army has recently stepped-up military operations targeting members of al-Shabaab, with which the Somali government has been at war for years, was established in early 2004 and is affiliated with al-Qaeda.
