The Egyptian presidency announced on Sunday that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi.

The presidency said in a statement that Raisi congratulated Sisi on his victory in the recent presidential elections and his re-election as president of Egypt.

The Egyptian presidency confirmed that the call included discussing the developments in the Gaza Strip, in addition to following up on the discussion on outstanding issues between the two countries.

The statement issued on Facebook said that the Egyptian president appreciated this gesture from his Iranian counterpart.

The statement added that the two presidents also discussed de-escalation between Hamas and Israel, while stressing the importance of the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people.

In a related context, Raisi reviewed with Sisi the situation in the Gaza Strip and stressed the need to confront the occupation and achieve Palestinian rights.

Sisi was re-elected for a third term with 89.6 percent of the vote in the December 10-12 elections.
