The Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, signed a memorandum of understanding with Libya to extend a new railway line linking the Egyptian city of Salloum to the Libyan city of Benghazi.
Minister Kamel announced this news during his participation in the first international forum of the New Development Bank in Cairo.
The minister stressed that this project aims to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries and facilitate the movement of trade and transport of goods across the border.
The new railway line includes a length of 750 km and will be implemented in multiple stages.
The cost of the project is expected to reach about $23 billion, which reflects the two countries’ commitment to strengthening cross-border infrastructure to achieve development and economic stability in the region.
It is worth noting that the city of Benghazi is developing six huge infrastructure projects during this year, including an airport, the Benghazi metro, and a solar energy station. The Reconstruction and Stabilization Committee, affiliated with Osama Hammad’s government, launched several initiatives aimed at enhancing local economic growth, in conjunction with the opening of five bridges. Newly built last January.
The comprehensive plan aims to improve urban infrastructure, water channels, green spaces, and promote a sustainable environment.
