Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has announced that his country will not be a conduit for any attempt to destabilize Mali or impose sanctions on it.

This statement came during a press conference following his talks with Mali’s transitional president, Assimi Goita.

Sonko criticized the “blockade” imposed by West African countries, including Senegal, on Mali under the leadership of former President Macky Sall, after the military coup that took place in the country.

During his statements, Sonko offered his sincere condolences for the Malian soldiers killed in the battles of Tinzouatine in northern Mali last July, stressing the importance of African unity, and that Senegal and Mali will remain united, and that the sovereignty of each country must be respected.

Sonko’s visit to Mali comes weeks after Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye visited the country, his second visit abroad since taking office, having previously visited Rwanda to attend the inauguration of President Paul Kagame.
