Diplomats said that the United Nations Security Council will vote on Thursday on a draft resolution drafted by Britain demanding an end to the rapid support siege of the city of El Fasher in Sudan.

The draft resolution, which was seen by Reuters, calls for an immediate cessation of fighting and an end to the escalation in the city and its surroundings, with the withdrawal of all fighters who threaten the safety and security of civilians.

The project calls on “all parties to the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians, including allowing civilians wishing to move inside and outside El Fasher to safer areas to do so.”

It urges states to refrain from intervening in a way that fuels conflict and instability, and instead to support efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.

The project requires the approval of at least nine members out of 15, provided that none of the permanent members (Russia, China, the United States, Britain, and France) use the veto.

On the field level, the Rapid Support Forces are close to resolving the battle of El Fasher, which has been ongoing for about a month, in their favor, with expectations that the Sudanese army will withdraw from the city at any moment, according to “Erm News” sources.

The sources said that the Rapid Support advanced significantly towards the positions controlled by the Sudanese army and its allied movements, where it reached the Southern Hospital, which represented the depth of the positions of the army’s control.

According to the sources, the Sudanese army is planning to withdraw from El Fasher, which is rejected by the armed movements that insist on continuing the fighting, noting that the matter may create disagreements between the two parties.

It is noteworthy that since the tenth of last May, fierce battles began in El Fasher between the Sudanese army and its allies in the armed movements on the one hand, and the Rapid Support Forces on the other hand.

El Fasher is the only city still under army control in the Darfur region of western Sudan.
