A Saudi official source said the kingdom is continuing to consider inviting BRICS to join the BRICS group, after the group asked to join it last year.
In an official comment on the remarks of South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor, who said that the Kingdom has joined the bloc, the Saudi source confirmed that Riyadh has not yet responded to the invitation, noting that the matter is still under study.
In August, the BRICS group invited Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, Argentina, and Ethiopia to join it from Jan. 1, but Argentina rejected the invitation last November.
In January, Saudi Commerce Minister Majid al-Qasabi confirmed that the kingdom had not officially joined the BRICS bloc.
Saudi Arabia’s consideration of the offer comes in the context of escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States, China, and Russia.
Despite the continued strong relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States, the kingdom is increasingly trying to take its own course and diversify its relations, in light of Washington’s declining role in the Middle East and North Africa, with the escalation of Russia and China’s role there.
