Russia’s relations with the entire African continent have intensified in light of the continuous rise of national liberation movements that found in Moscow an ideal partner with which to build balanced partnership relations, far from dependence and European colonialism that plundered the continent’s wealth.

Since 2009, from Libya to the Central African Republic, from Burkina Faso to Mozambique, from Niger to Sudan and Mali, Russia has returned strongly to Africa. To accumulate, day after day, more solid relations with the people of the dark continent, through its firm position to support the sovereignty and stability of African countries.

If Moscow’s relations with the entire African continent have intensified since 2018-2019, the basis of Russia’s success in Africa is based primarily on mutual cooperation in various fields, most notably the military field, as Moscow has concluded military-technical cooperation agreements with 40 African countries, in the context of Moscow’s support for efforts to rebuild law enforcement authorities destroyed by colonialism.

Russia has established or restored diplomatic relations with all African countries and has held several Russian-African summits in 2019, 2022 and 2023, the last of which brought together 49 African countries and 17 heads of state in St. Petersburg. Each time, Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized three ideas that characterize the Russian approach:

Russia does not come to Africa to plunder the continent, as its vast territories are rich in mineral resources.

It has no colonial past. On the contrary, the Soviet Union helped liberation movements.

It does not come to give moral lessons to Africans, nor does it impose political or economic dictates on them.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken a viewpoint opposite to the European policy based on plundering wealth and imposing dictates.

In addition to the military and security assistance that Russia provides to the countries of the African continent, Russia is one of the most prominent factors in food security, through the shipments of wheat and fertilizers that it sends periodically to help the large continent meet the needs of its children.
