Russian player Andrey Rublev beat his Spanish rival Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals of the Madrid tennis tournament.
Rublev knocked Alcaraz out of the championship race after a thrilling match that lasted almost two hours.
The match ended 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in favor of the Russian, who showed a strong performance and superiority in the course of play.
The 26-year-old Rublev managed to overcome the quarter-final barrier for the first time in his history at Madrid, after an outstanding performance against the 20-year-old Spaniard.
Alcaraz, winner of two Grand Slam titles, was unable to maintain his lead after winning the first set.
In the semi-finals, Rublev will face the winner of the match against American Taylor Fritz and Argentina’s Francesco Serondolo. This big win for Rublev comes after he achieved an important victory over a veteran player and reflects his remarkable development in his career.
The defeat is part of a series of unexpected results at Madrid, after Spanish star Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the tournament in the round of 16 during a match with Czech player, Jiri Lehčka.
