The Governor of the Russian Republic of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, announced an escalation in the number of casualties as a result of a series of terrorist attacks that struck the republic.
In a video clip posted on his official Telegram channel, Melikov reported that more than 15 police officers were killed while defending security and peace in Dagestan, in addition to a number of civilians killed as a result of clashes and attacks targeting peaceful targets.
The Anti-Terrorism Committee in Russia indicated that the armed attacks took place on Sunday evening, targeting two Orthodox churches, a Jewish synagogue, and a traffic police station in the regions of Derbent and Makhachkala, and the Russian Investigative Committee opened criminal investigations under the article “terrorist attack.”
The Dagestani Interior Ministry announced that six police officers were killed, and 12 others were injured as a result of the exchange of gunfire during the attacks.
The Mufti of the Republic confirmed that the death toll had risen to 9, including a priest in the Orthodox Church and the head of the Dagestan Traffic Police Department.
Media sources revealed that one of the perpetrators of the terrorist attack on Dagestan last night, who was eliminated, was Haji Murat Kagirov, a mixed arts fighter, and the cousin of the former mayor of Makhachkala, Musa Musaev.
The authorities carried out immediate security operations, which resulted in the killing of at least 6 militants in various areas of the republic, including four in Makhachkala and two in Derbent.
