Russia seized some of the equipment and technologies installed inside the American “ATACMS” tactical missile, according to what was revealed by a Russian expert specializing in weapons and military equipment.
The expert confirmed during an interview with Sputnik that Russian specialists are currently studying the guidance and flight correction system for the missile, in addition to other technologies such as laser gyroscopes and a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.
The United States developed the “ATACMS” missile as a “ground-to-surface” solid-fuel weapon with a range of 300 kilometers. The missile contains multiple ammunition with different payloads and targeting systems, and its most important models include:
- M-39: It contains a cluster payload of 560 kilograms with 950 “M74” submunitions, and its effective range reaches 165 kilometers.
- M-48: It includes a fragmentation warhead shared with the “Harpoon” anti-ship missile and has a range of up to 300 kilometers.
- M-57: Has improved accuracy with a possible circular deviation of only 10 meters but is ineffective against armored vehicles and fortified structures.
The British “Storm Shadow” system is equivalent to the “ATACMS” system in NATO’s arsenal, but it can only be launched from aircraft, while Russia currently has air superiority that focuses on air defense systems.
Western media revealed that the Atakms missiles sent to Ukraine were not very effective due to Russian air defenses.
It was reported that many of the missiles were intercepted, deceived, or missed their targets, and confirmed that Russia has shown an ability to adapt to any weapons it supplies to Kiev, which makes increasing Western aid to Ukraine insufficient to change the course of the conflict.
