Russia reopened its embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Thursday, 7 months after the papers of Russian Ambassador to Libya Haidar Aganin were approved by the Libyan Presidential Council.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Libyan-Russian Joint Committee, Minister of Oil in the Government of National Unity, Mohamed Aoun, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development in the Government of National Unity, Mabrouka Togi, a number of Libyan officials, and some Arab ambassadors.
Russian Ambassador Haidar Aganin said in a speech in Arabic: “Today is an important day in the relationship between the Russian Federation and Libya, and that cooperation between the two countries is entering a new era.”
The ambassador continued: “Diplomacy is the best means of communication and dialogue between countries to reach stability and common understanding,” stressing that: “Peace and development is not an option, but a definite necessity.”
The ambassador pointed out that on the twenty-fifth of September 2025, the Russian embassy will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Libyan-Russian relations.
The ambassador explained that the Russian embassy is about to open a consulate general in Benghazi this year.
