Russia announced on Sunday that it had sent fighter jets to intercept two American strategic bombers that attempted to cross its borders over the Barents Sea in the Arctic.

This event comes in the context of increasing tensions between the two countries, as the US military has intensified its air sorties in international waters, stressing that they are conducted in accordance with international law.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed in a statement that MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter planes had been sent to intercept “an air target approaching the borders of the Russian Federation.”

The statement added that “the Russian fighter crews identified the air target as two US Air Force B-52H strategic bombers,” and as the Russian fighters approached, the two American bombers corrected their course and moved away from the Russian border.

This escalation came after Russian warnings in June that American drone flights over the Black Sea could lead to a “direct” military clash.

Moscow had previously accused the United States of using its reconnaissance flights to support Ukraine in striking the Crimean Peninsula and pointed out that the growing geopolitical challenges in the region, as both parties consider that these operations may increase the risk of direct confrontations between the great powers, and Russia stresses the necessity Preparing an “operational response” to confront these threats.
