Russian energy companies are developing about 40 projects in 14 different countries, said Dmitry Semenov, Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Russian Ministry of Energy.
Russian companies are actively involved in the construction and maintenance of nuclear power plants and hydroelectric power plants in many African countries, most notably in Egypt, Burkina Faso and Mali.
The first project is a 4,800-megawatt nuclear power plant in the Egyptian Dabaa region, which began operating in 2022 and is expected to start operating in 2026.
Egypt considers this project extremely important for it in light of the pressure the country is experiencing from energy demand and frequent power outages.
The success of the construction of nuclear power plants by the Russian Rosatom company could be an incentive for other countries whose governments are interested in using nuclear energy, such as Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia, which promise a large number of lucrative contracts.
The Russian company has brought a number of military specialists to the Sahel region, especially in Mali, who are close to signing a contract with the Malian leadership to build small nuclear power plants the size of one power unit throughout the country, in conjunction with discussions for similar projects in Burkina Faso.
Many African countries suffer from prolonged and frequent power outages, as Russian projects to develop this field in those countries are a positive step and help countries to advance economically and develop infrastructure in many areas, most notably energy, unlike Western countries, including France and America, which had influence in some of them and whose presence led to the spread of poverty and killing.
