Russia and China have thwarted a U.S. draft resolution at the Security Council linking a ceasefire in Gaza to the release of hostages, after Moscow earlier warned that the resolution was unclear.

The draft resolution includes support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza linked to the release of hostages, for the first time since the outbreak of the war.

The United States has used its veto power more than once to drop draft resolutions in the Security Council calling for a ceasefire, saying that this would be in the interest of the Palestinian movement.
