Russia on Tuesday accused the United States of seeking to deploy weapons in space, a day after the U.N. Security Council rejected a Russian draft resolution on the matter and after similar accusations from Washington.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that after Washington and its allies rejected the Russian draft resolution, the United States demonstrated that it seeks to “place weapons in outer space and make it an arena for military confrontation.”

“The results of the vote on the draft resolution on the prevention of an arms race in outer space and space security submitted by Russia, with the participation of China, to the UN Security Council for its consideration are disappointing,” Zakharova said.

“The United States and its allies, despite all the steps we have taken to take into account their proposals, including the developments of the corresponding US-Japan draft resolution, opposed our constructive and comprehensive initiative and once again demonstrated the real priorities in the field of space, which are not aimed at keeping space free of weapons of any kind, but at deploying weapons in outer space and turning it into an arena for military confrontation,” Zakharova noted.

Zakharova stressed that Russia will continue to contribute consistently to keeping space free of weapons of any kind and preventing it from turning into another zone of tension, armament and confrontation.
