Russian company “Rosatom” announced on Tuesday that operations have begun at the first unit of the “Akkuyu” nuclear power station it is constructing in Turkey.
The company explained in a statement that this step represents a new major milestone in the Akkuyu project, noting that the trial operation is a final stage in the construction of the power unit at nuclear power plants, involving preparation, monitoring, and testing to ensure reliable and safe operation of the station.
It is planned to commission the first power unit at the station, which is the first in Turkey, this year in 2024.
In December last year, Rosatom announced that it had obtained the necessary licenses to operate the first reactor at the Akkuyu station from the Turkish authorities.
It is worth mentioning that the station was built based on a government agreement between Russia and Turkey in May 2010, with a project cost of $20 billion, and includes the construction of 4 reactors with a total capacity of 4800 megawatts.
In April 2023, Rosatom delivered enriched uranium for the Akkuyu station, making the station nuclear.
