On Sunday, a ship belonging to the humanitarian organization SOS Méditerranée rescued 55 migrants, including four minors, off the coast of Libya.
They were rescued after they were on a wooden boat in danger, and all survivors were safe, but one showed extreme fatigue as he boarded the ship.
A Lippi patrol boat arrived at the scene immediately after the rescue but did not intervene, while Italian maritime authorities designated the northwestern port of Livorno to disembark survivors.
However, the port is located 1,160 kilometers from the rescue site, which makes survivors stay at sea for several days.
The organization regrets this, noting that this increases the suffering of survivors who are already suffering from exhaustion and the difficulties they faced during their journey.
The “SOS MEDITERRANEE” has rescued more than 39,000 people in the Mediterranean, mainly in its central sector, the world’s most dangerous migration route.
However, statistics show the tragedy of many migrants, with 3,105 people missing or dying in 2023 while trying to cross the Mediterranean, and since the beginning of this year, 471 migrants have died or gone missing.
Humanitarian organizations continue to help migrants and refugees, but the challenges of transporting them to safe ports and providing the necessary care call for greater international cooperation and ongoing efforts to deal with the migration and refugee crisis in a comprehensive and humane manner.
