The Libyan Coast Guard General Administration announced the rescue of 220 illegal immigrants who were on board a dilapidated boat in territorial waters near the Bouri offshore oil field, near the capital, Tripoli.
According to the administration’s statement, the rescued immigrants included women and children, and belonged to different nationalities. They were transferred to the Coast Guard’s Shaab port in Tripoli, where they were handed over to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency to take the necessary legal measures.
Last July, the Libyan Coast Guard General Administration announced the rescue of 71 illegal immigrants of African nationalities off the coast of eastern Tripoli.
It is noteworthy that Libya, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, is a major transit point for irregular immigrants trying to reach Europe. The country has witnessed repeated tragic incidents, including the death of 50 illegal immigrants on the southern border with Niger. In 2023, Libya deported more than ten thousand irregular immigrants in coordination with the International Organization for Migration.
