A report by the associations Aswat Nisaa and Women and Citizenship revealed that the number of murders of women in Tunisia has quadrupled since 2018.
The report pointed out that the number of women killed in Tunisia during the year reached 25, with 13 of them killed by their husbands, 3 by their fathers, 4 by their relatives, and 5 by unknown parties.
With regard to crime methods, they killed seven women by stabbing with sharp objects, while 3 women were slaughtered, 6 were strangled, and four were killed by beating them on the head.
According to data from the Ministry of Family, Women, Children, and the Elderly, 69 murders of women were recorded in 19 governorates from the beginning of 2018 until the end of June 2023.
The number of murders of women has quadrupled since 2018, reaching 23 murders in the first half of 2023 compared to six in 2018.
Commenting on this phenomenon, Ahlam Bousroual, Secretary General of the Association of Democratic Women, stressed that the increase in violence against women and the increase in their murders reflect the spread of impunity, and that this comes in the context of the long duration of the trial and the rise in hate speech on social media.
Tunisian law provides for heavy prison sentences for perpetrators of violence against women, and obliges authorities to provide protection, health, psychological and legal care for battered women.
