A news report published by the English news section of the German “D.W” television network dealt with the Tunisian authorities abandoning illegal immigrants.
The report accused the Tunisian authorities of involvement in illegal mass expulsions funded by the European Union, citing many illegal immigrants with their horrific accounts of these inhumane practices.
According to the report, “Mamadou” from Chad said: “Tunisian Coast Guard officers took our mobile phones and money and then took us to the Libyan border, where they stripped us of our clothes and left us alone.” At a time when Human Rights Watch researcher Lauren Seibert said that what was happening had become a term called “Desert dumps.”
Seibert continued, saying: “The expulsion has become systematic since last year,” at a time when experts indicated that the Tunisian authorities intercepted smugglers’ boats departing from the Libyan coast.
Experts explained that in May 2023, Tunisia deported about 1,200 illegal immigrants for the first time to the border with Libya, causing a humanitarian crisis that left many dead, including children.
