A report by the London-based “Al-Arab” newspaper confirmed that the public spending file in Libya has become a file controlled by the major active powers in the country, making it an American and European affair par excellence.
The newspaper said: “The state budget in Libya has turned into an American-European affair. Washington is making several contacts with various parties to convince them of the necessity of resolving the budget crisis according to what was agreed upon two weeks ago in Tunisia.”
The newspaper explained that the outgoing National Unity Government, headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, insists on playing the role of the central authority that supervises budget management, which increases the complexity of the political and economic scene in the country.
The newspaper pointed to the consultations taking place at multiple levels between international and local parties to bring the views of the Libyan parties closer together, in an attempt to overcome the state of division and ensure financial and economic stability, as the political and governmental division in Libya remains a major obstacle to achieving a fair distribution of wealth, and the continuation of this division leads to… Wasting efforts aimed at resolving the financial and economic crisis.
The newspaper noted the growing American interest in the necessity of achieving unification of the Libyan state budget and securing the role of the Central Bank of Libya in determining the state’s financial and economic policies.
It is noteworthy that Libya has been suffering from continuous crises since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, as the country faces deep political and governmental divisions, deterioration in economic infrastructure and widespread corruption, which makes it difficult to manage national resources effectively.
