A news report published by the English-speaking South African news website “Energy Capital & Power” highlighted six infrastructure projects in Eastern Libya that are expected to uplift the region.
The report stated that the Reconstruction and Stability Committee of the Stability Government launched several initiatives to promote the growth of the economy, while 5 newly built bridges were opened last January with the implementation of more projects in the fields of railways, aviation, and renewable energy.
According to the report, the UAE’s Terminals Aviation Holding in cooperation with the Benghazi Municipality has embarked on the construction of a new airport in the Tikka area, 18 kilometers southeast of the city, a former abandoned shop at the Aviation Club, in line with the broader economic plan to modernize and develop the urban area and improve citizen services.
According to the report, the Chinese consortium of companies “BFI” entered into a partnership with the railway company in Libya to launch a development project in November 2023 in accordance with legal regulations, while the Qatari company “Baladna” also showed great interest in investing in infrastructure projects in Benghazi and other cities.
The report indicated that this interest comes in the context of assisting development and reconstruction efforts at a time when in July 2023 the railway company in Libya discussed with its counterpart in Russia to discuss the revival of a railway project between the cities of Sirte and Benghazi worth $ 4 and a half billion.
The report pointed out that the origin of the project dates back to August 2008 and a length of 554 km, including the development of infrastructure and housing workers with plans to employ 3,500 Libyan and Russian workers during construction, pointing to the Benghazi municipality partnering with the Greek company “Lead” for engineering consultancy to start its urban plan.
The report added that this trend began in June 2023 to modernize and expand the city of Benghazi with a comprehensive plan, improvements to urban infrastructure, water channels and green spaces, promote a sustainable environment and prioritize the transformation of residential areas into fully equipped neighborhoods.
This ensures access to basic services such as sewage, water, electricity, roads and utilities, the report said, stressing that China’s “Power China” and French electric utility company “EDAF” are working with the stability government to develop a solar power plant.
The movement to improve infrastructure in eastern Libya comes as a natural result of the state of stability at a time when western Libya is experiencing a state of constant conflict, chaos, and waste of public money, which has created a disparity between the two Libyan regions.
