The authorities in western Libya are facing a grim reality due to Algeria’s tireless efforts to form a new Maghreb entity, according to an analysis report by the Moroccan newspaper “North Africa Post”.
The report stated that the Arab Maghreb Union of Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya is “dead” after the long conflict between Algeria and Morocco over Western Sahara, which Algeria seeks to carve out from Morocco to establish the so-called “separatist Sahrawi Republic”.
This came after Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced, following a meeting with Tunisian President Kais Saied and the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, his intention to form what he called a “Maghreb entity for the three countries” in which Morocco and Mauritania exclude opposition to Algeria’s policy.
According to the report, this will present the authorities in western Libya with the grim reality that Algeria is seeking to create a regional grouping not for the sake of integration but to isolate Morocco by co-opting cash-strapped Tunisians and Libyans with their current crisis.
The report pointed out that Algeria seeks to mobilize support for Tebboune’s project, which “seeks to tear apart North Africa”, as its ambassador recently visited the speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, to include him on the side of exile in the side of Algeria and create hostility between Libya and Morocco.
