Tunisia’s National Guard on Monday recovered the bodies of 13 drowned migrants off the coast of Sfax and nearby cities, in the latest development of the tragedy of illegal immigration in the region.

In the fight against illegal immigration, the General Directorate of the National Guard announced that it had intercepted 1,867 migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan African countries, and thwarted 55 border crossings on boats.

In intensified actions against human traffickers, security authorities in Sfax arrested 14 people involved in mediation and human smuggling, confiscated 16 iron boats and 47 marine engines, and uncovered a random workshop designed to make marine boats intended for irregular migration.

As the climate stabilizes, Tunisia’s coasts are witnessing an upsurge in migration to nearby Italian islands, reinforcing the challenges faced by the authorities in combating this phenomenon.

Last year saw record numbers of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from the coast of Tunisia, with more than 1,300 people dying at sea, according to data from the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights.
