The Israeli attack on a refugee camp in Rafah, south of Gaza, sparked international condemnation, both officially and publicly, after pictures of the horrific aftermath of the attack spread on social media.

Officials said that the Israeli air strike caused a massive fire, which claimed the lives of civilians who were in the camp fleeing the battlefields, which angered world leaders who urged the implementation of the International Court of Justice’s ruling to stop the Israeli attack on the city.

Palestinian health officials say at least 45 people, nearly half of them women and children, were killed in the Israeli raid.

For his part, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Tuesday, “The army fired two 17-kilogram shells targeting two senior Hamas activists, and the two shells were so small that they could not ignite fires on their own.”

Hagari noted, “The army is looking into the possibility of storing weapons in the area. The investigation into this matter will be quick, transparent, and comprehensive.”

The raid sparked widespread outrage, including from some of Israel’s closest allies, with the United States urging Israel to take all precautions to protect civilians after “shocking images” from a military raid in Rafah that killed dozens of Palestinians.

A spokesman for the US National Security Council said in a statement, “As we have made clear, Israel must take all possible precautions to protect civilians, and we are actively communicating with the Israeli Defense Forces and partners on the ground to assess what happened.”

For its part, Saudi Arabia condemned the Israeli attack, and Qatar said that the bombing of Rafah might hinder efforts to mediate a ceasefire and exchange hostages and prisoners, while Kuwait denounced “blatant war crimes.”

Commenting on the raid, Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Jolie, said that her country is “appalled” by the strikes that claimed the lives of Palestinian civilians in Rafah, stressing that Canada does not support an Israeli military operation in Rafah, and also called for an immediate ceasefire.

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on the “X” platform: “These operations must stop. There are no safe areas in Rafah for Palestinian civilians. I call on Israel to respect international law and cease fire now.”

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said: “International humanitarian law applies to everyone, as well as to Israel’s behavior in war.”

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Israeli strike, saying that the attack “killed dozens of innocent civilians who were just looking for shelter to protect them from this deadly conflict.”

Guterres added in a post on the “X” platform: “There is no safe place in Gaza. These atrocities must end.”

An Egyptian border guard was killed in a “shooting” that took place on the border strip between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, where Israeli forces are present, according to what the Egyptian army announced.

The official spokesman for the Egyptian army said in a statement, “The Egyptian Armed Forces are conducting an investigation by the competent authorities regarding the shooting incident in the Rafah border area, which led to the martyrdom of one of the personnel in charge of insurance.”
