Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country avoided targeting Ukrainian energy facilities during the winter for humanitarian reasons.
Putin said Russia had been careful not to deprive vital infrastructure and social institutions of the energy needed to operate them.
Putin made clear that Russia has not abandoned the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and that it opposes the imposition of schemes that are inconsistent with reality.
The Russian president added that despite Russia’s reticence to negotiate under the pressure of Ukrainian attacks on its energy facilities, Moscow refrained from a similar response during the cold months, stressing Russia’s concern for the safety of civilians.
Putin’s remarks came during a conversation with his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, in which he touched on the refusal of Russia’s opponents to sit at the negotiating table.
He also pointed to the need to continue the search for diplomatic solutions that reflect the complex reality of the conflict, stressing Russia’s commitment to the peace process despite the current challenges.
