Hundreds of Mauritanians staged protests Wednesday night outside the US embassy in the capital Nouakchott, demanding the expulsion of the US ambassador from Mauritania.
The demonstrators demanded an end to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, allowing aid to enter the besieged population, and severing diplomatic relations with all countries supporting Israel.
A number of demonstrators expressed their “rejection of the continuation of Israeli attacks on the residents of Gaza,” stressing that “it is not possible to accept a pro-Israel embassy operating in the capital.”
Protests in front of the US embassy continued until dawn on Thursday, with demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and chanting in support of Gaza.
For her part, the communication officer of the “Student Initiative to Combat Zionist Penetration and Defend Just Causes”, Doaa Muhammad Yahya, called on young people and university students to take action to contribute to stopping the “war of extermination,” as she put it.
“The scale of destruction and massacres requires everyone to raise the scale of popular escalation to ensure that the war of genocide stops,” Yahya said.
