Yesterday, Wednesday, the Libyan authorities announced the postponement of the reopening of the Ras Jedir border crossing with Tunisia, which had been closed since the end of last March for security reasons.

The crossing was scheduled to reopen today, Thursday, but this was postponed until next June 24 to complete some procedures.

The Libyan Ministry of Interior explained that the crossing will remain open for humanitarian, emergency, medical and diplomatic cases only at the present time.

This postponement comes in the wake of the signing of a security agreement between Libya and Tunisia stipulating the opening of the four common gates at the Ras Jedir crossing, and strengthening surveillance to ensure that there are no armed manifestations in the region.

The Ras Jedir crossing was closed at the end of last March following an attack carried out by “outlaw groups” with the aim of causing chaos, according to statements by the Minister of Interior of the outgoing Dbeibeh government.

This crossing, located in northwestern Libya and about 170 kilometers west of Tripoli, is considered the main crossing point between western Libya and southeastern Tunisia, and constitutes an important hub for border trade, including smuggling.
