University professor and political researcher Ramadan El-Tweger expressed his doubts about the effectiveness of the Libyan government’s efforts to evacuate the capital Tripoli from armed factions, citing the dangers of these groups to public security.

El-Tweger’s statements came after an ammunition depot exploded at one of the factions’ headquarters in Zliten. In an interview with the newspaper “Al-Sa’a 24”, he explained that the Libyan state suffers from the fragmentation of military power and its distribution among different tribes and cities, which hinders the central government’s control over the situation.

He stressed that the government plans announced by Interior Minister Imad Al-Tarabulsi to disarm the militias and evacuate the capital from military equipment cannot achieve their goals without practical and decisive action by the state.

El-Tweger explained that the current situation in Libya, characterized by chaos and instability, does not allow for the implementation of effective plans to restore security and strengthen the rule of law, noting that this challenge requires collective efforts and coordination between all active parties in the state.

On July 28, 2024, the Libyan city of Zliten witnessed a huge explosion that caused panic among the residents and raised questions about the presence of armed militias in residential areas. The warehouse belongs to the “Al-Ayan Battalion” militia, also known as the “Zliten Knights.” The explosion did not cause significant casualties among the residents, as a policeman was injured in the head and was taken to the hospital for treatment, but it caused material damage to the buildings surrounding the warehouse.
