Egyptian media reports revealed that Al-Ahly club will face penalties including being banned from participating in the Egypt Cup next season, following its decision to withdraw from the current edition of the competition.
Media outlets quoted a source in the Egyptian Football Association as saying that Al-Ahly’s decision not to complete the Cup Championship for the current season will have consequences, including a financial penalty that could reach one million Egyptian pounds ($20.3 thousand).
The sports source confirmed that the club, which clinched the Premier League championship a few days ago, will have to “bear the financial damages imposed on the sponsoring company as a result of apologizing for not participating.” The team will also be banned from participating in the Egypt Cup next year, according to the report.
Al-Ahly was scheduled to play the round of 16 match against Pharco Club on August 20, but the club decided not to continue in the competition.
Al-Ahly’s decision came after a meeting between the club’s president, Mahmoud Al-Khatib, and the technical director, Marcel Koller, when it was decided to “grant the technical staff a vacation starting today due to the state of extreme fatigue and the pressure of consecutive matches throughout the past period,” according to a statement issued by Al-Ahly Club, late Friday.
According to the statement, general coach Sami komsan will be assigned to “lead the team in the remaining three matches of the league championship,” in addition to “giving players who played a large number of matches throughout the season a rest starting today and using a number of juniors in the upcoming matches.”
The board of directors also decided to “apologize for not completing the Egypt Cup Championship,” according to the statement. The Cairo club has 3 matches left in the league, against ZD (August 11), Enppi (14), and Modern Sport (17).
