One person was killed, and several others were missing after a dam collapsed during restoration work on the White Sea-Baltic Canal in the Republic of Karelia, northwestern Russia, on Monday.
The collapse occurred as a result of the destruction of a temporary sand dam between the 10th and 11th basins, which led to the water sweeping away a number of homes and properties.
Local authorities reported that the collapse destroyed 13 homes, and that rescue operations resulted in the rescue of seven people, including three children, while the fate of two women remains unknown.
Previous reports stated that six people were missing in the accident, but two of them were later found alive.
