The flow of migrants from Libya to Italy has seen a slight decrease during 2023, but it is essential to consider the significant disparity between the regions of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, controlled by rival governments.
According to the latest official Italian data seen by “Nova Agency”, the total number of migrants landed in Italy from Libya as of 31 December 2023 was approximately 51.700, of which 16.500 came from the eastern region of Cyrenaica and 35.200 from the western region of Tripolitania. This is actually a reduction of 2,45 percent compared to the approximately 53 thousand arrivals recorded in 2022.
However, analyzing in detail, we note an increase in landings from Tripolitania, under the control of the Government of National Unity (Gun) led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba, which marked an increase of 8,31 percent in 2023, compared to the 32.500 arrivals recorded in 2022.
In contrast, arrivals from Cyrenaica suffered a significant decrease of 19,51 percent in previous year, with a total of 20.500 arrivals from the region controlled by General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (Enl), hit last September by the devastating subtropical cyclone “Daniel”.
