Niger’s Interior Minister Mohamed Tomba has stressed his country’s desire to strengthen military cooperation with Russia and develop the capabilities of its security forces.
These statements came within the framework of the Nigerian government’s readiness to terminate the military cooperation agreement with the United States and considered the presence of US forces on its territory illegal and contrary to its interests.
Tumba told reporters that Niger is seeking specialized training from Russian experts in the fields of combat and the use of weapons, stressing that this step is necessary to combat terrorism in the region.
The move follows Niger’s ruling junta decided to terminate a military cooperation agreement with the United States, and after the expulsion of French troops involved in efforts to “combat jihadists in the Sahel region.”
For its part, the agency “Novosti” reported that Russian experts arrived in Niger to train local security forces in the field of combating terrorism, which confirms the new direction of Niger in strengthening military cooperation with Russia.
