Niger has reopened its border with Nigeria, after a period of closure following a military coup and sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Niger’s interior ministry has instructed border governors to re-allow entry and exit with Nigeria and to step up security along the border.

This is the first border Niger has decided to reopen, despite the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions last month.

Niger remains reluctant to reopen its borders with neighbouring countries, as after the Abuja summit, neighbouring Benin immediately implemented the regional organization’s decision, but the crossing remains closed by Niger for security reasons.
