Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mohamed Lamine Zein, affirmed that relations between Algeria and Niger are witnessing a renewal based on the foundations of brotherhood, friendship and good neighborliness.

This came in a press statement by Zein in the Algerian capital yesterday, following his meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to enhance mutual cooperation, especially in the wake of the tensions that the relations between the two countries experienced after the events of July 26, 2023, where Zein expressed his appreciation for Algeria’s support, noting that “the clarifications provided by President Tebboune touched us deeply.”

Zine added that these meetings are an important step to remove any “shadow points” that may have marred relations in the past, stressing that Niger sees Algeria as a strategic partner that can contribute effectively to developing the rich natural resources that Niger abounds with for the benefit of the two peoples.

He pointed out that the message he carried from General Abderrahmane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Protection of the Homeland in Niger, included calls to renew and activate ties between the two countries at all levels, from economic to cultural.

At the end of his statement, Zine stressed the strategic importance of these relations, stressing that “the future of Niger and Algeria is intertwined in many essential aspects, and joint cooperation represents the best way to achieve stability and prosperity for the two peoples.”

It is worth noting that before the current rapprochement, relations between Niger and Algeria were characterized by reservation and relative coldness, as interaction was limited and focused mainly on official diplomatic issues and some development projects, and there were no strong joint strategies or major initiatives at the level of foreign or economic policies.
