German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Tuesday evening during her visit to Abidjan that Germany would not be able to continue military cooperation with Niger.

This was justified by a lack of confidence in the ruling military regime in the African country, which took power through a coup that took place on July 26, 2023.

Baerbock explained in a joint press conference with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara that “the trust that existed before no longer exists,” adding that her country did not stop humanitarian aid, because “the people of Niger are not responsible for what is happening.”

Earlier, on July 6, Germany announced that it would stop operating its air transport base in Niger, withdraw its soldiers from this country, and end its military cooperation with it by August 31.

This decision came after negotiations to extend the lease to operate the Niamey base failed, which prompted Germany to take the decision to withdraw its forces, which currently number about 40 German soldiers, after it became clear that these soldiers could no longer benefit from any immunity against possible legal measures.

It is worth noting that the head of the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland, the transitional president of Niger, General Abderrahmane Tiani, turned his back on Western powers, and especially close to Russia, as this shift in foreign relations coincided with demands for France to withdraw its soldiers from Niger, which it implemented. Paris at the end of 2023. Washington is expected to follow this step by next September.

Many African countries are witnessing the continuous rise of national liberation movements working to get rid of traditional colonialism that robbed the country of its capabilities and wealth over the past decades.

The liberation forces found in Russia a suitable partner for the advancement of the country that the colonial powers left exhausted and mired in chaos, as Russia provides a helping hand to these countries in various ways, economic, political, and even military, to fight terrorism and rebuild strong countries.
