A Nigerian government source stressed the need for Washington to submit a proposal on a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops from Niger and discuss it with the Nigerien government.

The source said that after the cancellation of the military cooperation agreement with the United States, “American forces no longer have the right to carry out any exercises, movements or activities on the territory of Niger.”

Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh refused to set a deadline for any withdrawal of her country’s troops from Niger, noting that the authorities in her country are working “through diplomatic channels to obtain clarifications in this regard,” while expressing concern about the relationship between Niger, Russia, and Iran.

US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said his country was waiting for official clarifications on the Nigerian military statement because it came after a visit by a US delegation to discuss bilateral relations.

On Saturday, Niger canceled with “immediate effect” the 2012 military cooperation agreement with the United States.

Niger’s decision to end its “counter-terrorism” alliance with Washington came after the US accused senior officials of the country’s ruling military council of secretly discussing a deal that would allow Iran access to its uranium reserves.
