Writing in the New York Times, columnist Thomas Friedman asserted that it is time for the United States to tell Israel that its war goal of wiping Hamas off the face of the earth will not be achieved.

Friedman added that the United States should stop wasting time searching for the best U.N. resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“It is also time for Washington to tell Tel Aviv how to declare victory in Gaza and return to its place, because the Israeli prime minister is currently completely useless as a leader, he prioritizes his electoral needs over the interests of Israelis and the interests of Israel’s best friend, President Joe Biden.”

It is time for the United States to ask Israel to offer Hamas a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, in exchange for the release of all Israeli detainees and a permanent ceasefire under international supervision, including US, NATO and Arab observers, without an exchange of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

He empathized that Israel needs to think calmly and rationally about its options, while the Biden administration must stop whispering quietly that Israel must reconsider its war goals and tactics.

In this context, he explained, the Biden team “needs to engage the Israelis in a raucous, frank, and unfettered discussion about how much they have already achieved militarily, and also about how best to consolidate those gains.”

The United States should also guide Tel Aviv on how to end this war with a kind of new balance of power in Israel, before it plunges itself into the shifting sands of Gaza, seeking a complete victory that is a mirage, according to Friedman.
