Sudan’s Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Daw al-Bayt Abdul Rahman Mansour, stressed on Monday his country’s desire to reach a final agreement with Ethiopia and Egypt on the rules for filling and operating the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, in a way that preserves the rights and interests of the three countries.

A statement issued by the Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources quoted the minister as stressing that “Sudan is keen to advance negotiations through an effective vision and methodology, with the aim of completing a final agreement for the rules for filling and operating the Renaissance Dam in a way that preserves the interests of the three parties.”

Minister Daw Al-Bayt stressed that “Sudan’s firm and clear position on the GERD negotiations is based on the reference of international law and is based on the Declaration of Principles, which was signed between the three countries, in March 2015, in Khartoum, and the spirit of cooperation between the riparian countries on the course of the Nile.”

The fourth round of negotiations between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia kicked off in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Monday.

Last March, Ethiopia announced the completion of 90% of the Renaissance Dam, which causes tension in relations between Ethiopia on the one hand, and Sudan and Egypt on the other.
