The Palestinian Hamas movement said Wednesday in a statement that it will continue to negotiate through mediators to reach an agreement with Israel for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The statement said: “Hamas has shown the required flexibility in order to reach an agreement that provides for a comprehensive cessation of aggression against our people, but the occupation is still evading the benefits of this agreement, especially what achieves a permanent ceasefire, the return of the displaced, the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the provision of the needs of our people.”

The statement added: “The movement will continue to negotiate through the mediators to reach an agreement that achieves the demands and interests of our people.”

In the Egyptian capital Cairo, in the absence of an Israeli delegation, negotiators from Hamas, Qatar and Egypt are meeting to try to reach an agreement on a 40-day truce before Ramadan, which begins next week.

The ongoing war in the Gaza Strip for more than four months has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, according to the local health ministry in the Strip.
