Press reports revealed details of the Spanish government’s involvement in systematic attacks during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, in which Spain set a record number of medals.
The Spanish doctor, Eufemiano Fuentes, who was part of the Olympic medical team at the time, admitted in a video clip recorded with a hidden camera that he had received explicit instructions from the government to use all possible means to ensure the superiority of the Spanish athletes.
In a German television report, Fuentes revealed details that he worked “in the shadows for four years” before the Games, using blood doping and other prohibited methods to ensure that positive doping test results did not appear, or health problems occur to the athletes.
He added that the Spaniards learned stimulant techniques from former countries such as the German Democratic Republic, to obtain the necessary stimulant drugs.
Fuentes emphasized that although he later personally moved away from blood doping, he is aware that “others continue to use them.”
This revelation comes to add new pressure on the Olympic Committee and the Spanish government ahead of the start of the next Olympic Games, raising questions about future measures to ensure the integrity of sports and fair competition.
It should be noted that blood stimulants increase the number and size of red blood cells, which enhances the body’s ability to carry oxygen. Examples of these stimulants include: erythropoietin and drogonabine. They are difficult to detect due to the small doses and complicate their detection in traditional urine or blood tests. Also, some techniques such as subcutaneous injections Skin or use of intermittent doses makes detection difficult.
