Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the opening of the Rafah border crossing by Egypt, saying that Cairo is “detaining the residents of Gaza” for refusing to cooperate with Israel over the aid crossing.

The statement came after Egypt accused Israel of “shirking” its responsibility for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Israel’s control of the crossing exposed aid workers and truck drivers to “imminent dangers”.

“Israel is solely responsible for the humanitarian catastrophe that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are currently facing.”

Regarding international demands, the United States, Israel’s biggest ally, warned against an attack on Rafah and called for the crossing to reopen.

Senior USAID official Dan Diakhaus expressed the urgent need to reopen the crossing and facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid from Egypt to Gaza.

These developments come amid rising tensions in the region, amid fears of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
